Jean Piaget

1896–1980

Also known as Jean William Fritz Piaget

Swiss psychologist of child development whose genetic epistemology described how children's thinking passes through a series of stages. In the 1920s and 1930s his studies of children's language, reasoning and ideas about the world were a main point of reference, and of dispute, for Susan Isaacs's research at the Malting House School.

Influence

Lineage

  • 1921 analysed by Sabina Spielrein
Spielrein met Piaget at the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Institute in Geneva in the autumn of 1921 and was his analyst for eight months.

Conflict

  • 1930 disputed with Susan Isaacs
In Intellectual Growth in Young Children (1930) Isaacs set her Malting House records against Piaget's stage theory, arguing that he put down to maturation ways of thinking that depend largely on experience and that appear much earlier under favourable conditions.
