Id

Also known as Esdas Esça

In Freud's structural model, the oldest and wholly unconscious agency of the mind: the reservoir of the drives, governed by the primary process and the pleasure principle, without organisation, negation or sense of time. Freud took the term from Georg Groddeck and introduced it in Das Ich und das Es (1923); the ego develops out of it under the influence of the external world. 'Id' is the Latin rendering of the German 'das Es' (the it) adopted in English translation.
