Capacity to be alone
A mark of emotional maturity which, for Winnicott, rests on the paradoxical early experience of being alone while someone else is present: an infant reliably held by a mother who makes no demands can relax into an unintegrated state and discover its own impulses. Once this supportive presence has been internalised, the adult can be alone without anxiety.
