Chilean psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who trained in London, founded psychoanalytic training in Chile, and from the 1960s worked in Rome. He read the unconscious through logic and mathematics, as a mode of thinking that treats asymmetrical relations as symmetrical and parts as wholes, which he called bi-logic, in The Unconscious as Infinite Sets (1975). As a teacher in Santiago he shaped the first analytic generation there, Otto Kernberg among them.
