British Kleinian psychoanalyst who came to Britain from South Africa in the 1950s after studying philosophy. She qualified as a child psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic, then trained at the British Psychoanalytical Society, with Roger Money-Kyrle as her training analyst, and became one of its training and supervising analysts. She wrote on defensive organisations, on the 'enclaves and excursions' by which a patient avoids emotional contact with the analyst, and on the abnormal superego, building on Bion's ego-destructive superego. She co-edited books on projective identification and on Bion's 'Attacks on Linking'.

- Ego-destructive superego 1999 In 'Relating to the Superego' (1999), O'Shaughnessy sets the abnormal superego, Bion's ego-destructive superego, against the normal one. The normal superego grows from the emotional relations of childhood. The abnormal one stems from dissociations inflicted and suffered in childhood, usurps the normal superego's authority, and entices the ego to turn from its objects and from life.
