Person

Adolf Meyer

1866–1950

Swiss-born American psychiatrist who directed the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic at Johns Hopkins from 1913 to 1941 and was the most influential teacher of American psychiatry in the first half of the twentieth century. His psychobiology treated mental disorders as reactions of the whole person to life situations, to be understood through detailed life histories, an approach that shaped Harry Stack Sullivan and the interpersonal school.
