Concept
Structural interview
A diagnostic interview devised by Otto Kernberg to judge a patient's level of personality organization (neurotic, borderline or psychotic) rather than symptoms alone. Moving in cycles from the patient's complaints to how they see themselves and others, the interviewer tactfully points out contradictions and watches the response, in order to assess how well identity is integrated, which defences predominate, and whether reality testing holds.
