Concept
Primary maternal preoccupation
A state of heightened sensitivity which, in Winnicott's account, develops in the mother towards the end of pregnancy and lasts for some weeks after the birth, in which she identifies so closely with her baby that she can sense and meet its needs. He compared it to a normal, passing illness from which she recovers as the infant comes to need her less.
