Concept
Objective countertransference
Winnicott's term for the analyst's love and hate in response to the patient's actual personality and behaviour, as distinct from reactions that come from the analyst's own unresolved conflicts. He held that the analyst must be able to recognise and contain such hate, above all with psychotic and antisocial patients, and may eventually tell the patient about it.
