Relations

At rest every relation is a thin grey line. Its colour shows on hover and in focus.

In Racker's account of countertransference, the analyst's empathic identification with the corresponding part of the patient's mind: ego with ego, id with id, superego with superego. Resting on introjection and projection, it lets the analyst recognise the patient's experience as their own and is the ground of understanding and interpretation; Racker traced it to the analyst's sublimated positive countertransference.

  • Heinrich Racker 1957 Racker named the analyst's identification of each part of his personality with the corresponding part of the patient's (ego with ego, id with id, superego with superego) 'concordant' or 'homologous' identification. He did so in 'The Meanings and Uses of Countertransference', read to the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association in 1953 and published in 1957.
